The RealLife Standard
These are not marketing lines. They are how decisions get made here.
The Preservation Promise explains what we owe the people who trust us. This page explains what we owe ourselves. Every product, design, editorial and commercial decision at RealLife is measured against the orderings below. If a decision violates one of them, the decision is reconsidered — not the principle.
The Standard
- Integritybeforegrowth
- Trustbeforeprofit
- Peoplebeforeplatform
- Stewardshipbeforeownership
- Excellencebeforeconvenience
- Preservationbeforepopularity
- Humanitybeforetechnology
- Legacybeforeattention
Read left to right. When the two sides of any line are in conflict, the left side wins.
What we believe
- Every life deserves an accurate record.
- Every story deserves dignity.
- Every family deserves to preserve its history.
- Every generation deserves to know the one before it.
- Technology should serve humanity. Not replace it.
What we will never do
- We will never build our business by exploiting the people we serve.
- We will never encourage outrage because it increases engagement.
- We will never manipulate people to maximize screen time.
- We will never treat a person's life as inventory.
- We will never sell the story of a human life.
What we are actually holding
Nothing here is content. Nothing here is data. Each of these is a person, and is treated accordingly.
- Every Record
- represents a real person.
- Every Journal
- represents a real thought.
- Every Lesson
- represents real experience.
- Every Recipe
- represents family tradition.
- Every Voice recording
- represents someone who trusted us.
Our design standard
Always
- Every screen should feel peaceful.
- Every interaction should feel respectful.
- Every sentence should feel human.
Never
- Nothing should feel manipulative.
- Nothing should feel rushed.
- Nothing should feel disposable.
Our product standard
Most products are built by asking the first question. We are not permitted to ask it.
We do not ask
“How do we keep people here longer?”
We ask
“How do we make the time they spend here meaningful?”
We do not ask
“How do we increase engagement?”
We ask
“How do we increase preservation?”
Our partners
- We work with partners who believe in preserving people, families, knowledge and community.
- Partners support our mission. They never control it.
- Editorial independence is absolute.
Every future feature
Before anything new is built, it must answer one question.
“Will this help preserve someone's life more beautifully?”
If the answer is no, we do not build it. Not smaller. Not later. Not as an experiment.
The Founder's Covenant
Revenue keeps our mission alive.
It is not our mission.
If we are ever forced to choose between our principles and a dollar, we choose our principles. Every time.
The final test
Imagine a grandchild opening a Real Record fifty years from now.
- Would they feel closer to the person they came to know?
- Would they understand who they were?
- Would they feel grateful this existed?
If the answer is yes, we have done our job.
We are not building software.
We are safeguarding humanity's stories.
One life at a time.
