Leadership

Leadership is a deposit you make long before the day you need to withdraw it.

I commanded people younger than my own children. The thing nobody prepares you for is that authority is mostly borrowed — it comes from whether the people beside you believe you would carry them out. You cannot order that into existence. You build it in the boring months, in how you handle the kit inspection nobody cares about, and then one day you need it and it is either there or it is not.
